23 Best Archimedes Quotes from the Greek Mathematician

Archimedes, born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily, is renowned for his exceptional contributions as a mathematician, physicist and astronomer.

Born to an astronomer father, Phidias and possibly related to King Hiero II, Archimedes traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, to pursue his mathematical studies.

As one of history’s greatest mathematicians, he assisted King Hiero II in various predicaments using his innovative inventions.

One such instance involved confirming the purity of a gold crown where Archimedes developed a method of calculating density using the principle of water displacement, a discovery made while bathing.

This later came to be known as Archimedes’ principle. Another prominent invention was the Archimedes’ Screw, a device for lifting water to higher levels, initially utilized for draining leaking ships and still used today for irrigation purposes.

In the face of a Roman attack on Syracuse, Archimedes used his genius to devise defensive inventions like the Claw of Archimedes and the controversial heat ray.

Beyond inventions, his true passion lay in mathematics, making notable advancements in geometry and calculus and accurately calculating the value of pi.

Despite his contributions, Archimedes met a tragic end in 212 BC when a Roman soldier killed him.

His legacy lives on through his work and the Fields Medal, awarded annually to outstanding mathematicians, bearing his image.
