Fred Hampton, a prominent civil rights leader, was born on August 30, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois.
A dynamic advocate for racial justice, Hampton led the NAACP’s Youth Council in Maywood, excelling in both academics and athletics during high school.
In 1968, he joined and soon led the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP), where he utilized his experience from the NAACP.
He distinguished himself within the BPP by creating the first “Rainbow Coalition” which comprised a diverse group of organizations.
Moreover, Hampton actively organized rallies, launched a Free Breakfast program and initiated peace negotiations among rival gangs.

Despite his impactful work, Hampton became the target of an FBI investigation.
Tragically, on December 4, 1969, Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark were killed during a Chicago police raid.
