Joseph Brant was a Mohawk military and political leader.
He played an important role during the American Revolution and is known for siding with the British.
Educated in Connecticut he mastered English, Hebrew, Greek and Latin and blended Mohawk and British interests.
He opposed French forces as a teenager and later challenged American frontiers during the Revolutionary War causing significant concern for General Washington.
Post-war Washington sought Brant’s cooperation in peace efforts acknowledging his influence among the Iroquois.
Brant disillusioned with the British negotiated with the U.S. securing land for his people in Canada.
He remained active in Mohawk affairs until his death in 1807.
