Ruth McCue Bell Graham (1920-2007) was a Chinese-born American Christian author, known primarily as Billy Graham’s wife.
Born in Qingjiang, Jiangsu, she was the child of medical missionaries, Virginia Leftwich Bell and L. Nelson Bell.
She grew up in China, spent three years in high school in Pyongyang, Korea and finished her education at Montreat, North Carolina.
Ruth and Billy met at Wheaton College, marrying in 1943, post-graduation. They settled in Montreat and had five children.
Ruth wrote several books, some co-authored with her daughter Gigi Graham. While supporting Billy’s evangelistic career, she contributed significantly, such as naming the “Hour of Decision” radio program.
Her empathy for Asia stemmed from her upbringing, pushing Billy’s historic visits to China. In 1996, they jointly received the Congressional Gold Medal.
Ruth founded the Ruth and Billy Graham Children’s Health Center in 1966. After prolonged health issues, she passed away in 2007, surrounded by her family.
