Johann Adam Weishaupt was a German philosopher, professor of civil and later canon law and founder of the Illuminati.
Born in Ingolstadt, he was orphaned at five and raised by his godfather, Johann Adam Freiherr von Ickstatt, an Enlightenment proponent who influenced Weishaupt’s rationalist beliefs.
Weishaupt’s education began at a Jesuit school and he later graduated from the University of Ingolstadt with a law doctorate. After converting to Protestantism, he became a law professor.
In 1776, Weishaupt founded the Illuminati, envisioned as a society to free humans from religious constraints and challenge corrupt governments.
Although the order had a detailed structure, its radical rationalist principles led to its prohibition in 1784.
Weishaupt then fled Bavaria, settling in Gotha and publishing works on Illuminism.
