Andy Warhol was a celebrated American artist and filmmaker who was a key figure in the 1960s Pop Art movement.
Warhol, originally Andrew Warhola, was known for his mass-produced art that critiqued the commercial culture of the U.S. and framed the artist as a successful yet impersonal figure.
He gained sudden fame in 1962 for his depictions of Campbell’s soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles and Brillo soap pad boxes.
Warhol’s usage of silkscreen prints and repetitions reduced images to dehumanized cultural icons, reflecting American material culture and his emotional detachment from his art.
He later ventured into underground filmmaking, creating movies known for inventive eroticism and plotless boredom.
Warhol also survived an assassination attempt in 1968. Despite the incident, he continued to create prints of political and Hollywood celebrities and worked on commercial art projects.
