27 Phillis Wheatley Quotes from African-American Author

Phillis Wheatley, born in Gambia around 1753, was enslaved and brought to America in 1761, joining the Wheatley family in Boston.

Named after the ship that transported her, Phillis was educated by the Wheatleys, swiftly mastering the Bible, classics, British literature, astronomy and geography.

By fourteen, she began her poetic journey, gaining fame with a 1770 elegy. In 1773, Wheatley, supported by the English Countess of Huntingdon, visited London to publish her first collection, a groundbreaking work by a black American woman.

Her poems, influenced by iconic poets, African heritage and her strong Christian beliefs, were celebrated by both abolitionists and enslavers.

As a patriot, her disdain for slavery grew. Marrying a free black man, John Peters, in 1778, their three children tragically didn’t survive.

Wheatley, who later struggled financially, passed away in 1784. Her literary achievements championed the intellectual capabilities of African Americans, aiding abolitionist causes.

Phillis Wheatley was the first black poet in America to publish a book.
