Aileen Wuornos (1956-2002) was an American serial killer who murdered at least seven men in 1989-90.
Her crimes brought national focus to gender-related violence and how self-defense by women is legally treated.
The film “Monster” (2003) chronicled her life. Wuornos had a tumultuous childhood; her parents separated before she was born, with her father later institutionalized for child molestation.
At four, she and her brother were sent to their grandparents.
As a teenager, she was in a home for unwed mothers, dropped out of school and turned to prostitution.
In 1974, she faced charges including driving while intoxicated and weapon misuse. In 1989-90, she posed as a hitchhiking prostitute, killing seven middle-aged male motorists in Florida and Georgia.
Arrested in 1991, she initially claimed self-defense. However, by 1992, she was sentenced to death, admitting some murders were for profit.
