Edward Teach aka Blackbeard is one of history’s most notorious pirates.
Although his origins remain largely unknown he was believed to have been a privateer before becoming a pirate around 1716.
He gained infamy by transforming a captured French merchantman into a 40-gun warship, Queen Anne’s Revenge and terrorizing the Virginia and Carolina coasts and the Caribbean Sea.
In 1718, he established a base in North Carolina, levied tolls on ships and formed a partnership with the colony’s governor.
Later that year, a British naval force dispatched by the Virginia lieutenant governor killed him.
Despite legends about his buried treasure, it likely never existed.

The wreck of Queen Anne’s Revenge was discovered in the 1990s off North Carolina, yielding numerous artifacts including navigational tools and cannons.
