Dorothy Height is regarded as one of the most powerful women in modern civil rights history. She attended New York University, Columbia University, and the New York School of Social Work after graduating from Rankin High School in Pennsylvania in 1929.

At the age of twenty-five, Dorothy I. Height joined the National Council of Negro Women and began her work as a civil rights activist. She battled for equal rights for both African Americans and women throughout her life. During the 1930s, she was an outspoken opponent of lynching and advocate for criminal justice reform.

In 1994, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 2004, she received the Congressional Gold Medal.
