Hans Küng was a Swiss Roman Catholic theologian, born on March 19, 1928, in Sursee, Switzerland and passed away on April 6, 2021, in Tübingen, Germany.
His liberal theological views led to his censorship by the Vatican in 1979. Küng earned his doctorate in theology from the Catholic Institute at the Sorbonne in 1957 and was ordained in 1954.
He taught at various universities, including Tübingen, where he led the Institute for Ecumenical Research.
Appointed by Pope John XXIII as a theological consultant for the Second Vatican Council, Küng often challenged traditional church doctrines, resulting in his 1979 Vatican censure.
Although banned from teaching as a Catholic theologian, he continued under secular auspices.
