Karen Carpenter was an American singer and drummer who was very famous in the 1970s.
Born in New Haven, Karen Carpenter and her brother, Richard, initially formed an instrumental trio, winning a contract with RCA Records which was short-lived.
They later formed Spectrum, which also disbanded. In 1969, they signed with A&M Records, gaining success with hits like “Ticket to Ride” and “Close to You”.
By the early 1970s, they were a popular duo, securing three Grammy Awards, a world tour and their TV series “Make Your Own Kind of Music!”.
However, in 1975, it was revealed that Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa, making her too weak to tour.
In 1979, Karen recorded a solo album, which was shelved. After a brief, troubled marriage in 1980, she reunited with Richard for “Touch Me When We’re Dancing”.
Battling depression and her eating disorder, she underwent treatment in 1982.
In February 1983, at 32, Karen succumbed to cardiac arrest, a consequence of her prolonged anorexia.
