Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson a pioneering Black mathematician defied segregation and gender bias to significantly contribute to the U.S. space program.
Born in 1918 in West Virginia she graduated from high school at 13 and earned a double degree in French and mathematics by 18.
In 1951, Katherine joined NACA (later NASA) and despite a segregated workplace she joined an all-white male team crucially calculating John Glenn’s Earth orbit in 1962.
Her work also supported the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. Katherine retired from NASA in 1986 her legacy immortalized in the movie “Hidden Figures.”
She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and passed away in 2020 aged 101.
