Sitting Bull born around 1831 in South Dakota rose to prominence as a Sioux warrior and leader famously defeating General Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876.
Following years of tension with white settlers over Sioux lands he fled to Canada but returned to the U.S. in 1881 eventually joining Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show.
There he formed a complex friendship with Cody and met figures like Annie Oakley and President Grover Cleveland.
Despite his fame Sitting Bull witnessed the struggles of poverty and faced hostility from some quarters.
His life ended tragically in 1890 during the Ghost Dance Movement when he was shot by Indian police.
