Dante Alighieri, born in Florence, Italy, in 1265, was an illustrious Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher and political thinker.
Dante grew up in a family of modest means, lost his mother at a young age and was betrothed at twelve to Gemma di Manetto Donati.
Despite his marriage, Dante was enamored with Beatrice Portinari, a girl he loved passionately and continued to write about throughout his life.
As a young man, he studied various subjects, including poetry, painting and music, drawing influences from both Occitan and Latin poetry.
Dante is renowned for his monumental epic poem “The Divine Comedy,” a profound Christian vision of humanity’s temporal and eternal destiny.
