Jim Jones, the infamous American cult leader and self-proclaimed messiah of the Peoples Temple, led over 900 followers into a mass suicide known as the Jonestown Massacre in 1978.
His journey began in Indiana where he became a charismatic churchman, claiming to have psychic powers and healing abilities.
He was also a vocal proponent of racial integration and worked with the homeless. In 1955, he established the Wings of Deliverance, later known as the Peoples Temple.
Fearing a nuclear war, he moved the church to California. After facing allegations of misusing cult members’ income, he moved hundreds of followers to an agricultural commune called Jonestown in Guyana.

Here, he exercised intense control, confiscating passports and threatening his followers. The tragic mass suicide occurred following an unofficial investigation led by U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan, who was subsequently assassinated on Jones’ orders.
