Marvelous Marvin Hagler, originally Marvin Nathaniel Hagler, was an exceptional American boxer and middleweight champion, remembered as one of the top fighters from the 1970s and ’80s.
Starting his boxing career in Massachusetts, he won 57 amateur fights and the 1973 Amateur Athletic Union middleweight title before turning professional.
Hagler, known for his power as a left-hander, first won the world title in 1980 from Alan Minter.
He defended this title 12 times between 1981 and 1986, before losing it to Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987 in a contentious split decision.
Hagler, who legally changed his first name to Marvelous in 1982, then retired and began an acting career in Italy, later serving as a commentator for BBC’s boxing broadcasts.
