Ellen Ochoa is a former astronaut and director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

When she flew on a nine-day mission on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1993, Ochoa made history as the first Hispanic woman in space. She spent 40d 19h 35m in space.

Following the retirement of the former director, Michael Coats, on December 31, 2012, Ochoa was named director of the center.

She was Johnson Space Center’s first Hispanic director and second female director.
