Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, born in Clarksburg, Virginia in 1824, is second only to Robert E. Lee in Confederate prominence.
Orphaned by seven, he lived with his uncle, Cummins Jackson. Overcoming early adversities and limited education, he graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1846.
After notable service in the Mexican War, he taught at the Virginia Military Institute.
When Virginia seceded in 1861, Jackson formed an effective Confederate unit. His determination at First Manassas earned him the nickname “Stonewall”.
As a major general, he brilliantly defeated larger Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley in 1862, and shone at Second Manassas and Fredericksburg.
Tragically, in 1863, after being mistakenly shot by his own troops at Chancellorsville, Jackson died of pneumonia.
