In 1979, Jordan retired from politics to teach at The University of Texas at Austin. Despite multiple sclerosis, diagnosed in 1973, she remained active.

Her private life remained closely guarded, with long-time companion Nancy Earl. Jordan died of pneumonia complications in 1996.
