Barbara Jordan born on 1936 was a Houston native, lawyer, politician and university professor who contributed significantly to American politics.
A Baptist preacher’s daughter, she graduated with honors from Texas Southern University in 1956 and from Boston University Law School in 1959.
Inspired by her work for the 1960 Kennedy-Johnson presidential campaign, Jordan ventured into politics.
Despite initial setbacks, she made history in 1966 by becoming the first black state senator in Texas since 1883.
She also became the first black woman to preside over a legislative body in American history in 1972.
Jordan continued to break barriers, becoming one of two African Americans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972 and became the first African American woman to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in 1976.
Her Congressional tenure (1973-1979) witnessed her involvement in key issues like Vietnam, federal school aid, minimum wage and Nixon’s impeachment.
In 1979, Jordan retired from politics to teach at The University of Texas at Austin. Despite multiple sclerosis, diagnosed in 1973, she remained active.
Her private life remained closely guarded, with long-time companion Nancy Earl. Jordan died of pneumonia complications in 1996.
