David Brainerd was an American Presbyterian minister and was a missionary to the Native Americans.
David Brainerd was born to a farming family in Connecticut and aspired to join the clergy.
His life was marked by periods of depression interspersed with intense religious experiences.
After beginning his studies for the ministry at Yale College in 1739 Brainerd was expelled in 1741 for criticizing a local minister and refusing to publicly apologize.
Despite being officially barred from the ministry Brainerd became an itinerant preacher gaining support from many clergymen.
He was ordained in 1744 and worked as a missionary until his health declined due to tuberculosis.
He died in 1747 at the home of his friend Jonathan Edwards who published an account of Brainerd’s life in 1749.
