Dulce María Loynaz Muñoz (1902–1997) was a prominent Cuban poet, highly esteemed in Cuban literature.
Daughter of General Enrique Loynaz del Castillo and sister to poet Enrique Loynaz Muñoz, she grew up in a culture-rich environment.
Loynaz earned a Doctorate in Civil Law from University of Havana in 1927 but seldom practiced.
Her affluent upbringing enabled travels and meetings with notable authors like Federico García Lorca and Gabriela Mistral.
She began her literary journey by publishing poems in 1920 and later wrote the feminist novel, “Jardin.”
Loynaz was part of multiple literary academies and her contribution was recognized with the prestigious Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1992.
In 1959, she voluntarily stopped publishing and secluded herself, resurfacing in the 1980s when her work was rediscovered. She passed away in 1997.
