He was the son of pioneer oilman George Getty and a native of Minneapolis.

He was named the richest living American by Fortune magazine in 1957, and the world’s richest private individual by the Guinness Book of Records in 1966, with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion.

He was valued more than $6 billion at the time of his death.

Based on his fortune as a proportion of the concurrent gross national product, he was rated as the 67th richest American who ever lived in a book released in 1996.
