He is most known for being the oldest rookie in MLB history and being inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame.

On July 7th, 1906, in Mobile, Alabama, he was born Leroy Robert Page to John Page, a gardener, and Lula Page, a domestic assistant.

Lula added a “i” to their last name to make it sound more formal, making it Paige. Satchel grew to 6’4″ and started playing baseball in the Negro Southern League in 1926.

In 1948, at the age of 42, he became the Major Leagues’ oldest rookie.

On June 21, 1966, he played his final professional game for the Carolina League’s Peninsula Grays.
